Manager of USQ’s Corporate Club, Cheryl Abberton, was recently honoured by Rotary International, receiving their Paul Harris Fellowship award.
Named after the founder of Rotary, the award recognises a Rotarians significant contribution to their community and club.
Cheryl said she wasn’t expecting the recognition.
'I was truly surprised and really blown out of the water to be given this award, but also very proud. As a Rotarian you just do what you can for the common good of all people not really thinking of rewards,' she said.
Cheryl has been a member of Rotary since 1999 and during her service has held a number of volunteer positions including Club President, Treasurer, Public Relations Director and Club Service Director.
During her time with Rotary, Cheryl has been involved in a number of important humanitarian events, including the Bula Project in Fiji.
'There have been many highlights over the past 12 years. Being present in Fiji for the handover of our Bula Project at Nalanga School (building a new ablutions block) was special, The Youth Exchange 50th Anniversary dinner was another special moment and leading the club as President.
'Involvement with the Rotary Peace Fellows who attend UQ and all youth exchange students is always fun and a great cultural experience.
'I truly commend Rotary membership to everyone for service to the community, fellowship and fun.'
