The Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia the Honourable Robert Shenton French AC will present a public lecture in Toowoomba when USQ hosts the nation’s most senior judge on Friday June 25.
Chief Justice French will present Courts in a Representative Democracy, in what is a major coup for the University and an exciting opportunity for the legal community, with the lecture thought to be the first of its kind in the Garden City.
The lecture is part of the Shine Lawyers USQ Law free public lecture series.
'I see the Chief Justice as someone who places high importance on community connections so I thought if we invited him here that he would take the opportunity,' Head of the USQ School of Law Professor Mike Robertson said.
'It is not very often that the public get the chance to hear someone like Chief Justice French speak in person so I encourage those who want to attend to register their interest.'
Professor Robertson added that the School of Law appreciated the support from the legal profession in making the event a success, acknowledging the role of Shine Lawyers in particular.
'We have a strong and committed legal profession in Toowoomba, who I know are just as eager as we at the University to hear the public lecture.
'There has been an enormous amount in interest not only locally but across South East Queensland and the legal community has given us some very positive comments about the visit.'
Organisers are also working to ensure that it is a true community event.
'This is not designed just to be for the University and legal practitioners but we invite other members of the community to attend as well.
'Already we have invited students and teachers from the region’s schools so we are hoping for good community participation.'
Registrations are still being taken for the public lecture, with those wishing to attend asked to contact Paula de Keyzer in USQ’s School of Law on 4631 1575 or email paula.dekeyzer@usq.edu.au for more information.
