USQ hosts workshop for Disability Action Week
University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield campus recently hosted a workshop aimed at helping disability service providers to make the path to university easier for their clients.
USQ Student Support Officer Rhonda Watson said the workshop, a Disability Action Week activity, increased service provider’s knowledge of the support available at the University for students with a disability.
'By increasing their knowledge of the support available, the service providers can then develop stronger skills in assisting clients with a disability as they pursue tertiary education,' Ms Watson said.
'Beginning university education can be a daunting prospect to anyone, especially those students who have additional challenges to consider.
'The important thing for them to know is that there are many support systems already in place to make the process so much easier.
'This workshop will assist new students with disabilities to make a smooth transition to university through the support of informed service providers who know how best to steer them towards the assistance available to them.'
The Workshop, run over a full day covered legal frameworks, disability services provided by USQ and skills development in working with clients with disabilities considering tertiary education.
