Drawing from words

Urangan State High student Jade
Dixon describes a diagram to Ashley
Hielscher at the Student Experience Day

Using words to describe a geometric diagram was one of the challenging activities mastered by a group of Year 10 students attending university for a day.

The Urangan State High students had to use nothing but words to describe the shape so that their partners could use the information to reproduce the shape without having seen it.

The activity teaches students the importance of accurate verbal communication.

Ashley Hielscher was able to produce an almost perfect replica of the picture held by Jade Dixon.

The pair was among 100 Urangan High students and 110 Maryborough High students to attend two student experience days at the USQ Fraser Coast last week. (October 26 and 28)

The students attended four classes during the events, one presented by each of the faculties of Arts, Science, Business and Education.

In the science classes Dr Jamie Shield taught the students how to make electronic devices which flashed LED lights.

In the Arts class they learnt about non-verbal communication presented through things like tattoos.

The Faculty of Business class presented them with information about marketing and advertising, including a look at some very funny television ads.

High school students who may have been inspired to get started on their university studies can enrol in the USQ Head Start program, which enables them to do one or two university courses while still at school.

From next year they will also be able to do the USQ Tertiary Preparation Program before finishing school. Further information about the USQ Head Start program or the USQ Tertiary Preparation Program are available from USQ Fraser Coast on 41943133.
