USQ scholar receives prestigious honor from top-ranked Chinese university

Executive Director of the Centre of Excellence in Engineered Fibre Composites (CEEFC) Professor Alan Lau, was recently awarded an Honorary Professorship from the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in China due to his outstanding research achievements in the area of composite engineering.

For more than 10 years Dr Lau has worked in the fields of embedded fibre-optic sensor and actuator technology for railway and composite structures, and nano composites for space applications.

Dr Lau said he was privileged to be recognised by such a leading university.

'HIT covers a broad range of research topics with a strong focus on engineering sciences and is among the top one percent of institutions world-wide in the fields of Material Science, Chemistry, Engineering and Physics,' he said.

'HIT is known to have close links to the People's Liberation Army and Chinas space program. It is one of the main universities in China for space and defense-related research.

'The close relationship between CEEFC and HIT will enhance the future development of frontier research in advanced composite materials in the region, and provide more international research opportunities for researchers working at USQ.'

Dr. Lau received his honorary award during a ceremony where he presented a lecture on 'Recent research trend in smart composites' to academics, researchers and students at HIT. The certificate was presented by the Vice-President Professor Heyi Sun of HIT.
