Presentation to consider work life balance in Australia
A Professor at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University, Canada, Professor Duxbury will present Standing still is not an option: Why Australia needs to get serious about work/life balance on the Thursday morning of the conference at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). 'My talk focuses on the business case for change in the area of work/life conflict,' Professor Duxbury said. '(The presentation) provides a lot of data from Canada on the consequences of high work-life conflict – for employers, employees and families as well as society.' Reduced fertility and higher health care costs are some of the consequences as well as the potential to lose employees overseas, she said. 'If Australia doesn’t get serious about this issue they will lose their talented employees to other countries who “get it". 'They will also see a further reduction in birth rates in families where partners have higher levels of education and income.' In her presentation Professor Duxbury will provide data for people to use as a catalyst for change in their organizations. 'Businesses should not see work-life issues as something they are doing to “be nice” to staff, but rather a strategic imperative for organizations who want to recruit and retain talent in a sellers market for labour.' 'This is not a gendered issue. Nor is it one that only affects families with young children. Rather it is one that affects any employee with children, regardless of their age, or an employee with eldercare issues, or both.'
