26 March from 6:30-9:30pm. Held annually, Earth Hour aims to encourage councils, households, schools, businesses and organisations to take practical everyday steps to reduce their ecological footprint.
USQ will be having a free barbecue in the Quadrangle at the Toowoomba Campus with energy efficiency trade displays, live music and an outdoor screening of the film The 11th Hour – a documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo Di Caprio on the state of the environment.
Mr Dave Povey, Group Manager, Facilities and Chair, Environment and Sustainability Committee said that initiatives like this that not only raise awareness of USQ’s sustainability goals but also highlights the simple changes we can make in our daily lives to reduce our carbon footprint.
USQ has committed to being carbon neutral by 2020 and has already implemented a number of energy efficiency initiatives across the Toowoomba Campus such as the installation of smart meters to monitor energy usage, retrofitting eco saving lighting (removal of all incandescent lighting) and committing to purchasing 10% ‘Green Power’.
