Lights go out at USQ for Earth Hour

The lights went out at on Saturday night as USQ joined in the worldwide Earth Hour event to raise awareness of energy conservation.

Staff, students and community members attended the festivities at USQ Toowoomba enjoying a free barbecue, live music, energy efficient trade displays and the screening of the movie – ‘11th Hour’ – a documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo Di Caprio on the state of the environment.

Mrs Alicia Logan, USQ’s Environmental Officer was pleased with the event highlighting the great opportunity for the University to demonstrate its commitment toward environmental sustainability.

“It was great to see so many people participate in Earth Hour at USQ,” Mrs Logan said.

“The trade displays were popular and the movie, 11th Hour, showed people what challenges our environment currently faces.”

“It is also great the University is involved in this global event, highlighting the need to become more environmentally sustainable.”

2010 was the third year that USQ has been involved in Earth Hour activities, highlighting USQ’s sustainability theme in organisational planning.

USQ has committed to being carbon neutral by 2020 and has already implemented a number of energy efficiency initiatives across USQ Toowoomba such as the installation of smart meters to monitor energy usage, retrofitting eco saving lighting (removal of all incandescent lighting) and committing to purchasing 10% ‘Green Power’

Organisations and governments form more than 130 countries took part in Earth Hour in 2011 with millions of people committing to a more sustainable future.
