USQ joined millions of others around the world last Saturday night to show their commitment to the environment (March 27) when they took part in Earth Hour 2010.
More than 100 people from the Toowoomba community gathered at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre at USQ to mark the occasion.
Held annually Earth Hour aims to encourage councils, households, schools businesses and organisations to take practical everyday steps to reduce their ecological footprint.
'We had a great night here at the University and it was a chance for us to demonstrate our unity as global citizens in support action on climate change,' Chair of the
Environment and Sustainability Committee at USQ
Dave Povey said.
'As part of the event we showed former US Vice President Al Gore’s thought provoking documentary
An Inconvenient Truth in the lead up to lights out.
'The audience were also entertained by a live LED light performance by local artists Knighthawks and an acoustic set by 2nd String Heroes to mark the official lights out period.'
This was the second time that the University has participated in Earth Hour and is part of USQ’s ‘Go Green’ initiative.
'It also gave us the opportunity to share with our community some of the positive initiatives undertaken by the University in response to the challenge of becoming carbon neutral,' Mr Povey said.
