Award-winning actress and former USQ student Kellie Jones will feature in the latest offering from the Empire Theatre.

Water Wars is the Empires latest project and is a black comedy from Brisbane theatre company Umber Productions.

Following on from the Empire Theatre’s successful presentations of The Kursk and April’s Fool, the performances of Water Wars will be the world premiere of this exciting new play by award-winning playwright Elaine Acworth.

USQ alumni Kellie Jones said she was looking forward to working with her voice lecturer Kate Wilson (Kate Foy), who taught at USQ for many years.

'I’m very much looking forward to working in a professional capacity for the first time with my voice lecturer from USQ, Kate Wilson,' Ms Jones said.

'And I can’t wait to begin work on the premiere of Elaine Acworth’s beautiful play, Water Wars,' she said.

Developed over a number of weekends in Toowoomba and Brisbane, Water Wars will focus on community relationships.

Set in three suburban backyards, in an average Australian town, the play explores what happens when neighbours are forced to face up to the impending loss of the world’s most precious resource: water.

As a community and its occupants slowly descend into chaos and madness – prompted by increasingly prohibitive water restrictions and the threat of neighbourhood war – a young boy, Cal, and his dog, Freddo, attempt to make sense of the world around them.

Water Wars challenges audiences to re-think their social responsibilities and ask themselves the inevitable question: What would we do in a world without water?

Empire Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lewis Jones, said he is passionate about ensuring those in smaller towns don’t miss out.

'It’s incredibly important for the Empire Theatre, which is recognised as the cultural and artistic hub of Toowoomba, to be supporting the distribution of quality performing arts in the regions – and that’s exactly what we’re doing.'

Water Wars will play at the Oakey Cultural Centre on Wednesday 20 July and Thursday 21 July at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available now through the Empire Theatres Ticketing Office on 1300 655 299 or www.empiretheatre.com.au.
