More than 220 new students attended the first day of orientation at USQ Fraser Coast in Hervey Bay this week.

Numbers at the campus have swelled following a big increase in enrolments this year.

The students are studying education, arts, business and science and nursing programs.

There has been an increase in the ratio of school leavers to mature-age students.
USQ Fraser Coast Marketing Co-ordinator Amanda Guiver said there had been a shift toward more school leavers with most of the offers for places at the campus going to local Year 12 students.

'I think many parents are looking at the high costs associated with moving to Brisbane to study,' she said.

'But they are also realising the Fraser Coast campus offers state-of-the-art facilities and there is no longer any need to leave home to gain a highly-regarded academic qualification.'

Orientation Week gives students the chance to familiarise themselves with the campus before the start of lectures next week (March 1).

The USQ Student Guild yesterday provided a free barbecue lunch and activities for the new students. Between information sessions students were able to get to know one another on the gladiator challenge, at the candle-making van, with a friendly game of cricket and at various other outdoor activities.
