Winter appeal support for Flexischool

Organisers during last years USQ Winter Appeal
In a bid to continue its support of the Toowoomba Flexischool, USQ ran a Winter appeal and presented a cheque to the school community on Monday (10 October).

The appeal was coordinated by USQ’s Office of Social Justice and the Friends of Flexi Group. USQ has a long and deep affiliation with the Flexischool and has provided assistance to the school in a variety of ways.

Kathie McDonald from the Friends of Flexi Group said this year the appeal focused on raising financial support and collecting non-perishable food donations.

'There were at least five large crates of food donated including cereal, long life milk, pastas, sauces, sandwich spreads and milo,' Kathie said.

'All faculties along with student services, the library, and the refectory were helpful in promoting and supporting the appeal.'

The appeal began as a response to the increase in homelessness amongst the students of the Flexischool. Kathie said they hoped to make the appeal an annual event.

'This was the second appeal and we certainly do hope that it becomes an annual event. It began last year when Professor Glen Postle, one of the founders of Flexi and the Friends of Flexi chair, spent a day at the school and heard from the school head (Jo Brennan) that there had been an increase in homeless students.

'Glen then put out the word to the Friends of Flexi group and some of us coordinated an appeal, including approaching the Office of Social Justice for support.'

The cheque presentation took place at the Flexischool’s Chalk Drive campus at 11.15am. Students at the Flexischool also attended the presentation.
