Seminar to feature alternative education strategies

The fourth annual Alternative Education Seminar at USQ will give attendees an idea of the phenomenal work the Toowoomba Flexi School is doing with local disengaged and disenfranchised youth.

The free seminar will share the success stories from the Flexi School, as well as allowing attendees to engage with speakers from NAB Schools First program and program’s first national winner, CCCarers.

Chair of Friends of Flexi Dr Glen Postle said the last three seminars had gone extremely well and expected a similar result for this year’s event.

'Come along to hear about programs that are achieving national significance in addressing social problems surrounding disenfranchised youth,' Dr Postle said.

'We will be showcasing two programs and previous national winners of the National Australia Bank’s Schools First program.

'One of these is our own Toowoomba Flexi School.

'Find out what strategies are being used to bring young people ‘back into the community’ and why the community must own the solutions involved in these programs.

'Find out how the older men of TOMNET are working with young people as mentors, leading to a ‘win-win’ situation for the young and old alike.'

The seminar will be held on Monday, November 21 from 2pm to 4.30pm at room R113, R Block at the University of Southern Queensland.

The seminar is free and all are welcome to attend.

RSVP’s are required by Friday, November 14 for catering purposes, contact Joan McGilvray on 4687 5667 or c4c@usq.eu.au.
