USQ volunteers assist flood affected Toowoomba businesses |
In the weeks since floods swept through Queensland, USQ has provided financial assistance, time and expertise to the momentous task of helping residents and businesses recover from the disaster.
USQ Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Bill Lovegrove, thanked the University community for prioritising the care and welfare of colleagues, students and local regions during this difficult time.
'USQ’s strength comes not just from its staff and students but is drawn from the many close and sincere relationships it has forged with individuals, community groups and businesses,' Professor Lovegrove said.
'Although our three campuses have, thankfully, been relatively undamaged by the floods, the University is providing whatever assistance it can to the recovery and rebuilding of our regions.'
USQ’s flood relief support activities include extended assistance to more than 2700 students in flood affected areas, the provision of fleet cars to the Queensland Police for disaster relief in Withcott, Grantham and the Lockyer Valley region, and volunteer groups to assist with clean up operations.
Clothing, food items and thousands of dollars have been collected at USQ Toowoomba for the USQ/Lifeline Darling Downs Appeal to support residents in the Lockyer Valley. Earlier this month, all proceeds from a McGregor Summer School concert were donated to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.
In the academic arena, the Faculty of Sciences is providing specialist counselling services and advice while the Faculty of Education is offering ongoing support to teachers and students in the affected regions.
