Gerry Elmore appointed to Queensland Youth
Environment Council (QYEC)

USQ Springfield campus student Gerry Elmore couldn’t be more pleased by his recent appointment as Co-Chair of Policy and Research on the Queensland Youth Environment Council (QYEC).

The 3rd year Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce student is the only USQ student appointed to the current council, joining students from other universities across the state.

An initiative of the Queensland Government, the council was established in 2007 to provide government with a youth perspective on environmental issues and to inspire other youths to take action to achieve a more environmentally sustainable future.

The former Redbank Plains State High School Captain said he was excited by the prospect of contributing to a sustainable future for Queensland.

'I will be working along with my fellow Co-Chair on strategising and researching the viability of sustainable energy and resource use in Queensland,' Gerry said.

'The environment is something I am very passionate about, I dream of a country which is dependent solely upon renewable energy and I know this is possible.'

Gerry has long had a passion for creating and inspiring others to create.

'I have been working outside of the council with another student on developing Australia’s first carbon free lawn-mower by using magnetic and copper electricity.

'I want to inspire other young people to contribute to their future and create a philosophy which inspires them to achieve more than they think they can.'

USQ Environmental Law Lecturer Dr Noeleen McNamara said Gerry should be very proud of his appointment to the council.

'This is a truly great achievement from a student who has consistently shown an ability to go the extra mile.

'Gerry was the recipient of the USQ School Partner’s Scholarship in 2008 and has been a keen and active student on campus since beginning his program.

'I wish him great success on the council and am sure he will be an enthusiastic and valuable contributor.'
