Governor-General to visit USQ

The University of Southern Queensland is looking forward to hosting a visit by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia next week (Tuesday 20 March 2007).

As part of the visit, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC (Retd) and Her Excellency Mrs Marlena Jeffrey will be provided with an overview of the Australian Centre for Sustainable Catchments (ACSC).

USQ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bill Lovegrove, said the visit provides the University with an opportunity to showcase the current and future directions of the ACSC.

'The ACSC was established in October 2005 with the primary objective of ensuring the profitability and sustainability of water resources in Australia and overseas through research, original science and innovation.

'General Jeffery was the founding Chairman of the Perth based not-for-profit public policy think-tank, Future Directions International, before he became Governor-General and has a keen interest in the environment and sustainability.

'Given this we are looking forward to presenting him with an overview of the work currently being undertaken by the ACSC in the fields of water use, sustainability, climatology and spatial analysis,' Professor Lovegrove said.

During his visit, General Jeffery will also meet with Professor Bruce Horsfield, who is working on a three-part documentary series about the Special Air Service (SAS).

During his decorated Army career, General Jeffery served operationally in Malaya, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Military Cross and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

General Jeffery also commanded all combat elements of the Army from platoon to division - including the SAS Regiment, of which he is currently an honorary Colonel.
