International expert to speak at USQ global warming seminar
A world renowned global warming expert will visit USQ to present a seminar this Wednesday August 1, 2007.
An initiative of the Australian Centre for Sustainable Catchments (ACSC), Professor Gary Schaffer will present Global warming from fossil fuel use: a look at the next 100 to 10,000 years, which will draw on his extensive experience in ocean circulation and coastal dynamics.
'Gary is a physical oceanographer and Earth System Scientist who is currently working in the Department of Geophysics at the University of Concepcion, Chile,' USQ Associate Professor Joachim Ribbe said.
'He is one of the world’s leading senior scientists in field and modelling studies of ocean circulation and coastal dynamics in the South Pacific Ocean.
'Global warming is very topical and is of considerable interest to the community so we are excited about the presentation.'
With over three decades of experience in the field, Professor Schaffer has worked at various institutions all over the world.
'Before working in Chile, Gary was the founding Director of the Danish Centre for Earth System Science and has also conducted research at the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark and the Oceanographic Institute in Sweden.'
While at the University, Professor Schaffer will also re-establish his links with USQ and continue his work on a project with Associate Professor Ribbe.
'The project that Gary and I are working on will lead to a better understanding of one of the least explored regions of Earth’s climate system, the South East Pacific Ocean,' Associate Professor Ribbe said.
'Work within the collaboration will aid the validation of models used to project future changes to Australia’s climate, as the ocean is the key driver of long-term climate variability.'
