Internationally-renowned Governor to address graduates

The distinguished Governor of Orissa (India), His Excellency Shri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, will visit USQ this week, where he will address graduates during Saturday’s morning graduation ceremony (September 11).

More than 400 graduating Business students from across the state will converge on the Empire Theatre, where His Excellency will be the guest speaker.

USQ Vice Chancellor, Professor Bill Lovegrove, said it was a rare honour to have His Excellency visit the University, and that graduating students would be inspired by his achievements.

'It is a privilege for the University to welcome His Excellency Shri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare to Toowoomba,' Professor Lovegrove said.

'His Excellency is internationally recognised for his tireless work in the area of human rights, particularly the rights of women, children and differently challenged people.

'His Excellency served as Chairman of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation Appeals Committee for 12 years. He is a highly esteemed governor and was a Member of many delegations to the UN and other countries earning him a respected international reputation.'

His Excellency was born in Mumbai in 1928. At the age of 24 he enrolled as an Advocate in and was promoted to the position of leading Senior Advocate practicing in the Supreme Court of India. He was a Professor of Law for the Government Law College in Mumbai prior to becoming the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

His Excellency was also a member of the United Nations Sub-Commission for Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, and in 1988 he was elected its chairperson.

He was a member of several Parliamentary Committees; and has been a member of the Senate for the University of Bombay, and a member of the University Court for Delhi University.

The University will also host an afternoon ceremony where students from the Faculty of Sciences, Faculty Arts, Faculty of Engineering and Surveying and the Faculty of Education will graduate.
