Springfield's Harmony Day

Harmony was in the air at the USQ recently (23 March) when the Springfield campus celebrated Harmony Day with an exciting program of entertainment.

An initiative of the Commonwealth Government to encourage people to say no to racism, Harmony Day aims to reaffirm shared values as a community and celebrate Australia’s advancements as a multicultural society.

Students were treated to beautiful Polynesian and Aboriginal dance performance by local Indigenous school Hymba Yumba; an electrifying Hakka as well as a buzzing Bollywood performance and workshop that had the crowd cheering.

Additionally, during a two hour show students were able to enjoy the art of African drums and music as well as Indonesian martial arts demonstration and Japanese calligraphy.

The event was filled with exotic aromas from complimentary cultural food such as Bush Tucker, Indian and Tunisian delicacies as well as the traditional Aussie Bbq sizzle.

USQ Springfield campus International Support Officer Bonda Luck said the day was a great opportunity to celebrate the breadth of culture on campus.

'Harmony Day gives students opportunities to do things they might not otherwise get to do and show skills that may otherwise be hidden,' she said.

'There is an emphasis on the day of traditional values of justice, equality, fairness and friendship.

'Our underlying message is one of harmony and mutual respect, but the day is all about celebrating the many different communities here in Springfield and importantly, having lots of fun.

'This is the fourth year we have hosted Harmony Day celebrations at USQ Springfield and each year we hope to make the event bigger.'
