Professional women acknowledge equality challenge during global event

University staff step out for International Women's Day

USQ staff members stepped out in celebration at various activities held earlier this month to mark International Women’s Day.

The global event, held annually on March 8, has been observed since the early 1900s and is designed to inspire and celebrate the achievements of women.

Functions to promote International Women’s Day were held at the University’s Toowoomba, Springfield and Fraser Coast campuses throughout the week.

USQ Women’s Network president, Associate Professor Lorelle Burton, said the theme this year was: 'Women Leading the Way'.

'We are looking to build connections between professional and academic women at USQ to support each other and realise our professional goals,' Associate Professor Burton said.

'Importantly, we are also building connections between women across all three campuses.'

Activities included a half-hour walk to promote work-life balance, a lunch seminar to help women set their career goals and a luncheon with guest speakers Learning and Teaching Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lynne Hunt, and Human Resources Administration Associate Director Jane Farmer, who shared their stories of inspiration, including women who have inspired them.

Associate Professor Burton said International Women’s Day was a great opportunity to celebrate the contributions women make to society as whole and to acknowledge the challenges that still remain in achieving true equality.

'It was fantastic for women from across USQ to come together and show our support for each other,' Associate Professor Burton said.

'The events this week have been successful in harnessing a wonderful feeling of support and encouragement for all women across USQ, whatever campus they are from or job they perform.

'International Women’s Day has highlighted that while we as women do face particular obstacles and challenges in helping us meet our goals, we are also all part of a very supportive network that we can call on for help and advice whenever we need it.'

Colleagues can join the USQ Women’s Network by emailing ICT Services and asking to be added to the USQ Women’s Network mailing list.
