Local realtor and well-known business woman, Jan Malmstrom, will graduate with a Master of Professional Studies during tomorrow’s USQ Graduation Ceremony.

Despite having never finished high-school, Jan has worked hard to grow and develop a successful career in real estate, being the first woman in Australia to be offered a position on LJ Hookers national board The Admirals Club.

Jan’s husband died from cancer 20 years ago and she was left with three children to raise and a business to run. Despite only having a limited experience in the business, Jan took it on and built it up to be one of the most successful property management franchises in the country.

Jan has since spent many years running staff development programs in property management across Australia and New Zealand. Armed with her extensive experience in real estate and property management, and encouraged by her brother Glen Postle, Jan decided to enrol in a Masters of Professional Studies.

'A couple of years ago I suggested the new professional studies program might present an opportunity for her to undertake further study and to use some of the work she was doing as a focus for her study,' Glen said.

' I remember her saying at the time that this is not for her as she was not the academic type. With a little encouragement she thought about it and enrolled and has been very successful, completing the Masters in a comparatively short time even though her work takes her all over Australia and NZ.'

Glen said that Jan is a testament to the fact that through degrees like USQ’s Professional Studies, women are now recovering missed opportunities.

'Jan was typical of many females of her generation - discouraged from completing high school as this was thought to be a waste of time for females - they left school, looked for an office job until they married and had kids.

'This expectation was pretty much the norm. The professional studies program allows talented females to reclaim missed opportunities such as tertiary study.'
