Journalism and Finance majors launched at USQ Springfield campus. |
Students interested in a career in journalism or the finance industry will now have the option of studying at the USQ
Springfield campus with the launch of two new majors in 2011.
The campus has added a Journalism Major to its popular Bachelor of Applied Media (BAM) program and the Bachelor of Commerce has included a Finance Major.
Associate Director of the Faculty of Arts, Dr Daryl Sparkes said students undertaking the Journalism major as part of their program would have an advantage when looking for work as a journalist.
'The BAM program equips students to work in the media industry and prepares them with the needed digital skills that cross many contemporary work environments,' Dr Sparkes said.
'While conventional journalism degrees offer a few courses covering broadcast, the BAM program combined with a Journalism Major will fully equip students to work in a broadcast newsroom.
'They will have an excellent grasp of what is going on behind the camera as well as in front of it.
'The BAM program gives students many opportunities to practice their skills in television and radio studios and this type of hands-on experience will give start out journalists the competitive edge.'
Faculty of Business Professor Marie Kavanagh said the delivery of the finance major at Springfield campus would allow students studying a Bachelor of Commerce degree to major in accounting and finance, strengthening their professional and career prospects.
'Students studying the Bachelor of Business will also be able to study the finance major if they choose to do so,' Professor Kavanagh said.
'Courses such as Personal Financial Planning and Credit Analysis and Lending Management will strengthen student’s understanding of financial management matters and equip them to work in careers in financial planning and the banking and finance industry.
'As the only Ipswich university now offering Commerce and Business Bachelors degree programs she urged prospective students to consider studying close to home in a supportive environment at the USQ Springfield campus.'
