For many professional services firms in regional and rural areas keeping a business sustainable can be a daunting challenge.

Legal practices in these areas are not exempt from these pressures but a Workshop to be run by USQ will work to address some of these issues.

An initiative of the University’s School of Law, the Sustainable Regional Legal Practitioners’ Workshop is open to all legal practitioners across the Darling Downs and will be held later this month.

'This Workshop has been designed to provide information on practice management for practitioners concerning the specific issues associated with sustainable regional legal practice,' Head of USQ School of Law Professor Mike Robertson.

'In regional and rural locations legal practices, like other professional service firms, have trouble recruiting and retaining staff. What we want to do through this Workshop is provide an opportunity to assist with these issues.'

A number of guest speakers will be in attendance, including Professor Kim Economides, who Professor Robertson said could provide a rare insight into concerns that have confronted rural lawyers in England and Wales.

'Professor Economides is USQ’s Distinguished Visitor and will talk about his research into rural legal practice in England.

'Other guest speakers on the day will talk about the importance of having an increased awareness of ethical requirements that affect sole practitioners and small firms.'

While interest in the Workshop has been strong, organisers are encouraging others to get involved and register.

'Registration for the event closes on Friday October 16 and while we will be flexible with the date we urge anyone who is interested to let us know as soon as possible.'

The Sustainable Regional Legal Practitioners’ Workshop will take place on Friday October 23 in Q501/502, Phoenix Building, at the University and is free with lunch and morning tea also catered for.
