Former student in running for Walkley award
Former USQ Journalism and Literature student Mark Willacy has named as a finalist in three reporting categories for Australia’s most prestigious journalism awards, the Walkleys.
Mr Willacy is currently ABC’s North Asia correspondent and will be in the running for a Walkley in the Radio news and Current Affairs Reporting, Sustained Coverage of an Issue or Event and Investigative Journalism for his coverage of the Rikuzentakata, Japan tsunami and his investigations into the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Mr Willacy graduated from USQ in 1995 and started work at ABC in Toowoomba, moving on to Brisbane, Gladstone, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, the ABC Middle East Bureau and finally, North Asia.
In 2003, Mr Willacy won the Walkley Award for Radio Current Affairs for his coverage of the Iraq War and was nominated for Walkley awards in 2004 and 2006 for his coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The winners of the 2011 Walkley Awards will be announced at a gala presentation in Brisbane on November 27.
There were about 1300 entries in this year’s awards.
