The start of a new year heralds the return of the University of Southern Queensland’s (USQ) McGregor Summer School which kicks off today from 8.30am.
This year, almost 400 musicians, artists and craftspeople will converge on USQ Toowoomba for the popular performing, visual and creative arts residential school.
More than fifty classes will be held over the ten-day summer school, ranging from musical instruments, jewellery making, oil painting and everything in between.
Program Coordinator Christine Matthews said there were classes for just about anyone.
‘We have participants aged 11 or 12 and we have participants in their 80s,’ Ms Matthews said.
‘We’re expecting students from all over Australia including the Northern Territory, Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand.
‘We even have a student from Ireland who is now a regular and has been attending the McGregor Summer School for the last few years.’
Brand new classes include ‘Drawing the Wild’, a workshop on animal portraits taught by Melbourne artist and author of How to Draw Lifelike Animals Linda Weil and ‘Hats With Flair’, a hat making class led by Elaine Mergard from Beerwah.
This will be the 44th year the McGregor Summer School has taken place and Ms Matthews said she was very much looking forward to it.
For those who missed out on this year’s Summer School, the McGregor Winter School will be coming to USQ Toowoomba in July.
