USQ calls for Indigenous artists to submit works for NAIDOC exhibition

Submit artworks now for a NAIDOC
inspired exhibition at
USQ Springfield campus
opening 4th July.

USQ have invited Western Corridor, Brisbane and Toowoomba region Indigenous artists to submit artworks for a NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) exhibition to be held at the Springfield campus from the Monday 4 to Saturday 30 July.

Exhibition organiser Vivienne Roma from USQ’s Centre for Australian Indigenous Knowledges (CAIK) said the exhibition would showcase a selected number of works at the campus library to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

'The artworks will be selected to tie in with the NAIDOC celebrations, with preference given to those that promote Indigenous art and develop an appreciation and awareness of the rich and diverse cultures of Indigenous people in Australia,' Ms Roma said.

'We are looking for works by contemporary Indigenous Australian artists whose artworks cross a variety of historical and contemporary practices, incorporating sculpture, collage, painting and photography,' Ms Roma said.

'The artworks need to be submitted by the 24 June and delivered no later than the 28 June with submissions capped at no more than three per artist.

'The artworks will be available for sale throughout the exhibition directly through the artist and will be available for collection after the exhibition closes, which will further support the Indigenous art community in these regions.'

Every year NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

'NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life,' Ms Roma said.

'The exhibition will be a great opportunity to participate in one of many activities to be held across the region and to support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

'The exhibition will open with a launch on the 5 of July from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and run until the 30 July.

'The public are invited to come to the library and view the beautiful range of Indigenous artworks on display and purchase a one of a kind piece for their collection.'

Artists can apply to submit artworks by contacting Vivienne Roma by 24 June.
