USQ Toowoomba’s USQ Women’s Network Inc held a ‘Change: The next step is ours’ NAIDOC Week Celebration Lunch in Toowoomba on Friday 1 July.

The lunch celebrated the next steps in the development of USQ’s Gumbi-Gumbi Gardens which is located on the front drive of USQ Toowoomba.

David and Mary Kearney, the Landscape Architects involved in the Gumbi-Gumbi Garden, were guest speakers at the lunch and discussed their plans for the Garden.

Additionally staff from other USQ sections, most notably the Centre for Australian Indigenous Knowledges will support other regional events.

USQ Fraser Coast representatives are involved in a series of community breakfast events focusing on increasing awareness of the barriers Indigenous Australians face while furthering their education and seeking employment.

The breakfast events will commence on 4 July at Hervey Bay RSL Club. Additionally, staff from the Campus will be involved in a variety of family and community activities throughout the week.

USQ Springfield will exhibit indigenous artwork with the Library space at the Campus. The exhibition will run from 5 July through to the end of the month.

USQ has also been successful in gaining national recognition for a Helping Hand support model for Indigenous nursing students with an ALTC (Australian Learning and Teaching Council) Citation announced this week.

The Citation was awarded to a team from the Faculty of Sciences - Ms Lynne Stuart, Ms Vicki-Ellen Horner, Ms Roslyn Wharton-Boland, Ms Sherry Holzapfel and Ms Anne-Maree Nielsen in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery for developing retention and support strategies that enable Indigenous nursing students to realise their university dreaming journeys.

USQ will undertake additional NAIDOC week activities with regional schools later in the year.
