Toowoomba prepares for annual open day

During the day staff will be available to help answer questions
about univeristy life and education

USQ is busily preparing for its annual Toowoomba Open Day, but this year things are going to be a little different.

While the traditional fun and festivities of Open Day will still take place, this year USQ are inviting the community to come out and see what really goes on inside its lecture theatres and laboratories.

Open Day Coordinator, Marianne Theios, said USQ was opening its door to the community so they could see what actually happens at university.

'This year we have changed the formula of Open Day. We are opening our doors to show people what really goes on at USQ,' she said.

'We invite people to find out what actually happens, what we do and what we can offer you. For all our on-campus students, an open door policy is standard – and on Open Day, we extend this to you.'

From participating in a real television studio and starring in their own magazine feature story, to battling it out in USQ’s mock court room or exploring the ancient art of winemaking, the community will get a firsthand experience of all USQ has to offer.

Ms Theios said most activities will be held on the Engineering Green, but some faculties will host activities closer to their facilities.

'Staff will also be available to discuss our support services such as the Learning Centre, Financial Assistance, Student Services, Careers and Employment Workshop, Library Services, How to Apply, Studying Abroad, Alumni and Advancement, Pathways to University and Residential Colleges.

'We will also have the Student Relationship Officers (SRO’s) on-campus to speak with students. The SRO’s support students on their learning journey and will be available on the day to discuss any questions people might have about university life.'

Open Day will also feature plenty of entertainment with local band The Civil Rights performing twice during the day. The USQ Big Band will also perform, and not-for-profit organisation the Kiyua Performing Arts will showcase their talents at the Sound Stage.

There will also be international arts and crafts, Japanese Origami, the Filipino Bamboo dancers roaming around and children will also be entertained with the Old McDonald’s Animal Farm, face painting, Cleo the Clown and Children’s story telling in the Funland Tent.
