USQ rocks out to live music

Caught Jester play at USQ Springfield

Students at USQ Springfield campus were treated an outdoor rock concert last week to shake out some cobwebs before the start of the Semester 2 exam period.

The concert, organised by the hosts of Phoenix Radio’s Paradigm program featured two up and coming unsigned Brisbane bands, Caught Jester and Pretty Ugly.

Paradigm host and Bachelor of Applied Media (BAM) third year student Caitlyn Nosenzo said organising the concert served the dual purpose of responding to audience feedback and formed part of her course assessment.

'Earlier this year for an assessment item I had to propose a project to work on later in the year,' Caitlyn said.

'I decided to focus on making my radio show Paradigm as good as it could be by taking on board listener feedback and putting that feedback into action.

'The concert event was a result of this and a way to promote both Phoenix Radio and the Paradigm program.

'It was a great learning opportunity as I hope to work as a host or producer in radio when I graduate and radio stations are often involved in organising concerts such as these.

'My biggest lesson was probably that weather can ruin anything, but thankfully the rain while threatening, held off for this event.'

USQ BAM Lecturer Mr Ashley Jones said Phoenix Radio is an online radio station serving Ipswich and the surrounding areas.

'The radio station was established as both a teaching and learning facility for USQ BAM students and is a community based radio station,' Mr Jones said.

'Events such as these are one way USQ can interact with the local community and provide students with real life learning experiences at the same time.'

Paradigm is a two hour program, broadcast on Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm at Phoenix Radio.

'The program gives a teenagers perspective on world events and news,' Caitlyn said.

'It is a show by youth, for youth and features old school and alternative music, but not the top 40. We try and find the weirdest news we can each week and discuss that.'
