Members of the Darling Downs law community gathered recently for the Downs and South West Queensland Law Association’s annual gala dinner.

USQ contributed sponsorship to this event.

Chief Justice, the Honourable Paul de Jersey who is also the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University was guest speaker at the dinner, which is the legal profession’s premier event in the region.

Head of USQ Law School Professor Mike Robertson was also invited to speak at the function by Ms Kym Briese, President of the Downs & South West District Law Association.

Professor Robertson, who took up his position at the University earlier this year, said that it was a great opportunity for the University’s School of Law to thank the Downs and South West Queensland Law Association for their support for the School and its programs.

'Since the Law School’s inception in 2007 the law community on the Darling Downs and South West Queensland have been very supportive of what we are doing at USQ,' Professor Robertson said.

'We have developed very strong links with the region’s law professionals and we are very keen to further strengthen this relationship.

'I used this opportunity to update the Association’s members on the progress of the law school.

'There is still some work that needs to be done but our enrolments are rising, we are developing more courses and we have also appointed new staff in the School.'

Ms Briese welcomed the University’s involvement in the event.

'The dinner was a chance for members of the 60 law firms in our jurisdiction to come together and celebrate the legal profession.

'The Honourable Paul de Jersey, who is a great supporter of ours, was there and for the first time we had State Government representation through Kerry Shine.

'It was also an opportunity to hear from the University and get an update on how the law school is going and what Professor Robertson’s vision is for the school.'
