USQ-researched technology receives Premier’s Award

A new piece of technology developed by Queensland Health and researched by staff from USQ is making the already-tough jobs of hospital employees just that bit easier.

The Electronic Patient Journey Board project has already been installed in nearly 50 wards in 13 hospitals state-wide since February and recently received the 2011 Premiers Award for Excellence in the Health Sector.

USQ Digital Media Services manager at Jeff Black said the feedback received from the hospitals undergoing the trial had been fantastic.

'The Patient Journey Board is a large LCD television monitor that displays information on the status of patients and is easily accessed by medical, allied and clerical teams,' Mr Black said.

'The software links to the patient’s admission details.'

The boards are large LCD panels that offer access to important patient information, allowing hospital staff to read a patient’s status at a glance instead of wasting time going through hospital charts and hand-over sheets.

'Staff can also print the information displayed on the screen at any time.'

Project Officer Susan Moller said every hospital’s needs were unique but the project had been working positively in each of them.

'USQ has been invaluable in researching each hospital undergoing the trial and getting positive feedback,' Ms Moller said.

'We are about to install our 47th and 48th boards in our 14th hospital and we already have a queue of hospitals all lining up to test out the technology.'

The USQ team is comprised of Professor Raj Gururajan from the Faculty of Business and Law who is a specialist in Health Informatics, Paulette Baker who is looking after logistics for the USQ team, Jodie Parke who looking after financial aspects and Jeff Black and his team who are looking after media aspects.
