Join the bike-riding revolution

Calling all bike owners - it’s time to dust off those rusty bicycles, pull out your joggers and get ready for USQ’s Ride to Uni Day on Wednesday 12 October.

Held in conjunction with the National Ride to Work Day initiative, USQ organisers are hoping to rally USQ’s cycling (and non-cycling) community in an effort to get fit and play their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

USQ Environmental Officer, Alicia Logan, said the day is not only a fun way to get staff and students active but provided an opportunity for the university community to think about ways to lessen their impact on the environment.

'If you are thinking about riding to work Ride to Uni Day is a great opportunity to get started, apart from the environmental and economic benefits riding to work is a great way to incorporate exercise into your life,' she said.

Alicia also said the End of Trip Cycling facilities provided cyclists with purpose built convenient facilities to freshen up before work and safely store their equipment.

'In keeping with the University’s strategic goal of being carbon neutral by 2020, the facilities have been designed to include a number of environmentally sustainable features such as solar hot water, photovoltaic power and rainwater harvesting.'

New commuters are encouraged to apply now to use the free End of Trip Cycling facilities on-campus at USQ Toowoomba.

The facilities offer undercover storage for up to 88 bicycles and are conveniently located at the east end of Y Block and the southern side of D block. Equipped with lockers, showers and toilet amenities the facilities provide a secure area for riders to leave their equipment at the end of their journey.

USQ will host a free breakfast on the lawn near Y block. Registration is free on Facebook, and everyone who signs-up will go into the draw to win some great prizes.
