Hamish Young; Tom Gough; Aidan Larder from Concordia Lutheran College were busy working on running a mini power plant, enjoying the experiments that the Challenge brings.
‘Running the power plant is pretty cool and we are really looking forward to trying some of the other experiments,’ Tom said..
The school students were able to test their skills in a variety of different challenges including ‘Future Power’, ‘Biobot’ and ‘Eco Habitech’.
‘This is our first time here and we are really enjoying it,’ Aidan said.
‘Beats being at school today!’
The Regional Science and Engineering Challenge lets students engage in activities to explore scientific principles – and to have fun while doing it.
‘This is something I definitely want to study after school,’ Hamish said.
Students from Ipswich Girls Grammar School took out the day’s competition.
The event is being held at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) until this Friday (May 20).
Seven schools took part in today’s (May 18) activities: Concordia Lutheran College, Assumption College (Warwick), St Marys Catholic College (South Burnett), two teams from Toowoomba Grammar School, Ipswich Girls Grammar and Chinchilla State High School, Our Lady of the Southern Cross College (Dalby) .
During the four-day event, almost 1000 students from 31 schools will compete against each other in eight different activities. The team with the most points receives a trophy. The two highest scoring teams from the Challenge will go on to compete in the Super Challenge against teams from northern New South Wales.
The Challenge dinner, to be held at 6.30pm on Thursday night, will feature guest speaker Lindsay Brown, Professor of Biomedical Sciences at USQ.
