Springfield Yarners hand over 49 hand knitted
blankets to the Salvation Army

The Springfield Yarners knitting group handed over 49 hand knitted blankets to the Salvation Army today to provide a little comfort in the lives of those in need in the Ipswich community.

Club coordinator and USQ Education Lecturer Dr Nicole Ann Todd said the group, now in their fifth year of knitting had handed over more than 100 blankets since the beginning.

'We have been told people treasure the blankets and appreciate the effort the local community have gone to,' Dr Todd said.

'We hand over a large batch of blankets each winter and look forward to giving more in the coming years.'

The Salvation Army’s Major Margaret Dobbie said the blankets will stay within the Ipswich community.

'Some will be donated to the Indigenous Ministry, some to aged care and some to families who are starting over after domestic violence.

'We always need blankets as there are always people in need,' she said.

Dr Todd said a big thank you should go to the many nameless knitters who drop off blankets and wool throughout the year.

'We donate the blankets in winter but continue to knit all year round and we have so many people in the community who simply drop their completed blankets or strips into the university without any names attached.

'We couldn’t do it without them and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

'Anyone can come along and knit with the group, you do not have to be an experienced knitter,' she said.

'If you can’t make it to the club, but would still like to participate, just drop in your finished strips at the Level 1 reception desk at the USQ Springfield campus.

'We are using 4mm knitting needles and 8 ply wool to cast on 45 stitches and then knitting every row (garter stitch) until the strip measures 1.5 metres.

'When we have six strips we sew them together to make a blanket.'

The Springfield Yarners meet on Mondays from 1pm to 2pm at the USQ campus, Sinnathamby Boulevard, Springfield Central in the Staff Room on Level 6. For further information please email Dr Nicole Ann Todd
