Tamara Noonan was among hundreds of new students welcomed to USQ Springfield campus for the first day of Semester 1 orientation on Monday (February 21).

The former Forest Lake State School student has enrolled in the new Journalism major, forming part of the Bachelor of Applied Media (BAM) program.

Tamara said she enrolled in USQ’s BAM (Journalism) to give her an edge when it came to finding work in the field after graduation.

'I really wanted to study journalism, but I also wanted to have the media production background to make me a complete all-rounder when it came time to find a job,' Tamara said.

'The fact I can also get broadcast experience working on USQ’s Phoenix Radio was also great.'

Tamara was also one of the first students to take advantage of the new Richlands Railway Station stop on the USQ Centenary Bus Service route.

The bus route runs from 7.45am to 6.20pm throughout the semester, stopping in Jindalee, Westlake and Mt Ommaney as well as Wacol Railway Station and now Richlands Railway Station.

'I literally live five minutes from Richlands Railway Station, so it is really easy to catch the bus to the university,' Tamara said.

USQ Springfield campus Director Mr Doug Fraser said the bus service was an important element in how the university makes tertiary study accessible to students in the Western Corridor.

'With prepaid ticket options starting as low as $1 for a one way trip, the bus service offers cash strapped students an excellent alternative to car travel,' Mr Fraser said.

'We also have a number of services and activities available to students once they arrive on campus to make their initiation into tertiary studies as easy as possible, including the Building Pathways to Academic Success Program.

'The Building Pathways program sessions run from Tuesday 23 February until Friday 25 February and guide students through key study skills including, unpacking assignment criteria, mind mapping, lecture note taking and library sessions to name a few.

'The program delves far into the key skills a new student will need for academic success and I highly recommend our first years take part if possible.'

The International Student Orientation will be held on Friday, February 25 from 1pm and includes registration, a campus tour, student visa information, lunch and information sessions on Studying in Australia and Staying Healthy in Australia.

The campus will host a Back to Uni themed party in March. For more details, contact Megan Axelsen (07) 3470 4258.
