Community sets sight on $200k for local cancer patients

If it's been a while since your joggers have seen the pavement why not get the cobwebs off them and join the Cancer Council Queensland in their efforts to raise much needed funds to support local cancer patients?

Cancer Council is hoping to raise $200k during this year's Relay for Life. The annual event raised more than $170k last year and this year's patron USQ Vice-Chancellor Bill Lovegrove said they were aiming to bet this figure.

'We hope to attract 172 teams or 2000 participants, the relay will raise vital funds to help beat cancer,' Mr Lovegrove said.

'Most people have been touched by cancer in some way- either personally or through someone they know. Cancer has had a significant impact on the community and Relay for Life is one way we as a community can join in the fight against the disease.'

Cancer Council's Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with friends and family and have some fun.

'Relay for Life is a unique event that gets families and friends together to celebrate life and remember those who have been affected by cancer,' Bill said.

Bill is no stranger to running. Outside the world of academia, Bill is equally talented, keeping fit with down-hill skiing and competing in triathlons.

'I am really looking forward to participating in such a worthy cause. We launched the relay last weekend and already we are having a wonderful time which is a good indication the actual events going to be a blast.'

The Cancer Council has put the call out so get a team together and take up the challenge. There are no age limitations or fitness requirements, it is suitable for everyone and anyone can join in the fun!
