Darling Downs schools hear University's new directions

20 school staff from throughout the Darling Downs met at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) on Wednesday 23 July 2008 to learn of the University's new directions and initiatives.

Principals and deputy principals travelled from as far as Chinchilla and Goondiwindi to receive an update on USQ's new programs and future plans for research and learning and teaching.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Bill Lovegrove said it was a great opportunity to meet with school leaders face-to-face and discuss the schools' opinions and ideas.

'The University is undergoing a time of great change and strengthening our relationship with local schools by keeping them up-to-date is of great importance,' Professor Lovegrove said.

'Today's event gave the University a chance to present our new suite of degree programs which build on our past and will enable us to continue to be an education hub of the future.

'It was also an opportunity to hear feedback from the schools and discuss how schools and the University as education providers can work together for the region.'

Goondiwindi State High School Deputy Principal Marilyn Sinclair said she was eager to learn where the University was headed in the future, and of particular offerings for rural students.

'I wanted to find out what the University has to offer in terms of changes with the courses and what support mechanisms are in place to support students from rural communities,' Mrs Sinclair said.

'I'm interested in getting information and contacts; it's handy to have someone to call and its good to know the University is involved in the community.'

Deans from each faculty also presented updates on new programs and initiatives as part of the event.
