Radio Phoenix officially launched at USQ Springfield

A new community radio station in Ipswich was officially launched today (27 February 2008) at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield campus by Vice Chancellor Professor Bill Lovegrove.

Radio Phoenix will initially ‘broadcast' via a streaming service on the internet, with plans underway to secure a broader community license allowing broadcasting to air later this year.

The radio station first began streaming on February 25 2008 to coincide with Semester 1 Orientation Week celebrations at USQ Springfield.

USQ Springfield Director Doug Fraser said while the primary role of the radio station was to support the teaching and learning being undertaken at the Springfield campus. The station will also reach further into the Ipswich community.

'We hope the radio station will be embraced by Ipswich residents and become a vital thread in the fabric of the community,' Mr Fraser said.

'The radio station will mirror the Springfield campus ethos of being ‘community centred and career focused' and provide great opportunities for the University and community to work together.'

USQ Bachelor of Applied Media (BAM) lecturer Ashley Jones said he had already received overwhelming support from local residents and business.

'The response from the local community has been really great, even before it has launched. People have already contacted me with program ideas and offers of assistance.

'We are inviting people in the Ipswich and Springfield communities to become involved with the station.

'While our focus will be to teach our BAM students we will also structure less formal basic training to ensure members of the wider community get to know the radio station equipment as well.

'I am keen to hear from any groups in the community who have program ideas.

'We would like to ultimately work with people in the area to develop their own programs with the support of a BAM student producer.'
