Interested in a career in radio? Stay tuned

The University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) online radio station Phoenix Radio would like to hear from local high school students who would like to become involved with the production of a youth program scheduled to commence in early 2009, called Up Beat.

USQ Bachelor of Applied Media (BAM) Lecturer Ashley Jones said the University was currently working with students from The Springfield College (TSC) to lay the foundations for the program, aimed at young people aged between 13 to 18

'We hope to have the Up Beat program on air in January and hope to work with a number of schools in the area to find presenters and producers amongst their students.

'It is a great opportunity for high school students interested in a possible career in radio to test the water so to speak and get a feel for the industry before they need to make decisions about their tertiary studies.

Mr Jones said if students are interested in becoming involved with the program they should contact him directly and speak to their school about the project.

'I am already in discussions with a number of schools, but would love to hear from more,' he said.

The Springfield College student Tom Wohling has been working with USQ student producer Claire Campbell to create the early format for Up Beat over the school holidays.

'When the program is up and running I hope to work both on the air and doing some things behind the scenes,' Tom said.

'I have been thinking about a career in radio, and my Mum suggested this would be a good opportunity to see if I really like it.

'I am particularly looking forward to taking outside calls when I am presenting and interacting with the audience in that way.'

Mr Jones said the station would continue to work with the local schools and the community to produce shows of interest and assistance to people living in the Greater Springfield and Ipswich area.

'We are always open to hearing from people in the community who have ideas for shows. We team them up with BAM student producers to get new programs underway.'
