Unsigned bands given helping hand

Two Springfield musicians have teamed up to present a new radio program geared at showcasing Australia's amazing array of talented unsigned bands on the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Phoenix Radio.

Wired will provide unsigned bands with a platform into the music industry and give listeners an alternative to the steady flow of mainstream music predominantly on the airwaves.

Presenter Michael Looke said the program would be an opportunity for up and coming bands to reach record labels, agents and venues.

'There is a large community of unsigned bands out there who really need a chance to be heard and Wired could give them their big break,' Michael said.

'We will uncover their stories and introduce them to our listeners and the industry.

'If you want to hear fresh music from undiscovered artists Wired will be your magnifying glass taking a look at the grassroots of Australian music.'

Michael and co-presenter Jonathan Geange said the idea for the program was born from their love of music and personal experiences spent working in the industry.

'Jonathan is a former guitarist for the triple Grammy nominated band The Newsboys.

'He has toured the USA and Europe, playing to audiences of more than 20,000.

'Working full-time in the Australian music circuit for the past 12 years, performing at many venues here and overseas he has first hand experience of the highs and lows of the industry.'

Michael has also performed professionally as a soloist and band lead vocalist for more than12 years.

'I have supported a lot of well known artists including Jimmy Barnes, Vanessa Amorosi and Pseudo Echo.

'But we have had no experience in radio prior to this, so we had to overcome some nerves before the first show.

'We are getting a lot of support from the University and our student producers to create the program.'

The duo has already put together enough material for the first four to five shows which will go to air on the first Wednesday of each month from 11am to 12 noon.

Michael and Jonathan would like to hear from upcoming bands from around Australia who would like to be featured on the show.

'If anyone knows of a band they think everyone should know about, let us know.

'We are not just limiting our search to local bands or one specific genre. We'd like to hear about bands from all over Australia that touch and reach people.'

To tune into Wired go to www.phoenixradio.com.au on the first Wednesday of each month. Wired Bytes will air each other Wednesday from 11am to provide gig guide information and visit venues around town.
