The Gateway Schools Program
In 2005 the Gateway to Industry program was extended to include the Wine Industry. The program has been established in conjunction with the development of the Queensland College of Wine Tourism.
The Gateway Schools project involves a selection of schools strategically located to allow successful links with the Wine Tourism Industry in Queensland Wine Regions. This project replicates and extends the successful Wine Tourism Industry Links program established by Stanthorpe SHS.
The key role of Gateway Schools is to develop a Wine Tourism Industry links program with the following components:
-
strategies to attract and identify students with an interest in pursuing a career in the industry
-
integration of elements of the wine industry across the curriculum
-
specific curriculum offerings that provide industry-relevant training to Certificate II level in viticulture, food processing (wine), hospitality, tourism
-
where appropriate, links with local alternative providers eg. TAFE for the delivery of training
-
strong and effective links with their local wine tourism industry through work experience, structured industry placement, school-based traineeships, cadetships, vacation employment, involvement in industry events etc
-
links with the Queensland College of Wine Tourism, including access for practical training and orientation to post-compulsory courses.
A strong scholarship and awards program has been developed to maximise industry support and incentives for both students and teachers. The Gateway schools supported and serviced in the development and delivery of the above components through the Manager, Wine Tourism Industry based at the College.
