Animal ethics process

Step 1

Read the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (available from the Office of Research and Higher Degrees) and the ethical guidelines for students using animals or animal tissues for educational purposes.

The Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation’s animal welfare website contains additional information, links and responses to frequently asked questions relating to scientific use of animals.

Step 2

Read the application guidelines (PDF* 26KB).

Step 3

Complete an approval form for either animal ethics - research (DOC 241 KB) or animal ethics - teaching (DOC 213 KB) noting the following:

  • length of answers and spacing between questions is at your discretion
  • typed applications are preferred but if this is not possible, please print legibly. Please ensure that each page is numbered and the document is secured with a clip (not stapled)
  • if a section is inappropriate, write N/A in the section
  • define and explain all technical details, terminology and acronyms in plain English.

Step 4

Submit an original (hard copy only) of the ethics approval form to:

Ethics Officer
Office of Research & Higher Degrees
University of Southern Queensland
Toowoomba QLD 4350

Step 5

A copy of each successful application requiring use of USQ Animal House facilities will be filed in the Animal House.

Step 6

Once approved you will be required to provide an annual progress report (DOC 119KB) during your research and a completion report (DOC 119KB) at the end of your research to the Animal Research Ethics Committee. This is in compliance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes which is mandatory under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2011 (QLD).

The questionnaire for monitoring research involving animals will be sent to you and will need to attach it to the report.
