Submitting a proposal

Every dealing with a genetically modified organism (GMO) must be licensed by the Gene Technology Regulator (GTR) unless the dealing is:

  • an exempt dealing (no exempt dealing can be started without written permission from the IBC)
  • a notifiable low risk dealing
    or
  • on the Register of GMOs.

USQ's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is empowered to recommend to the GTR that a proposal be an exempt dealing.

Preparing proposals

1. Prior to preparing proposals you should first contact the Chair of the IBC to determine which category your research would fall:
  • exempt (a proposal must still be submitted to the IBC)
  • notifiable Low Risk Dealing (NLRD)
  • licensed dealing not for intentional release (DNIR)
  • licensed dealings for intentional release (DIR).
2. The Chair will advise what application form from the Office of Gene Technology Regulator will be required and guidelines and advice will be given to complete them.

3. Once you have completed the application form, you should contact the Office of Research and Higher Degrees (ORHD) to submit your application. The ORHD will forwarded your application on to the IBC for recommendation.
