How to apply

1.  All applications for research degrees may be submitted at any time during the academic year. Prior to applying for a research higher degree, you should:

2.  After contacting a potential supervisor, email a short outline (approximately 500 words) of your intended research project to them.  If the staff member expresses an interest in your intended research, you may be requested to provide written examples of any recent research work.

3.  If it is agreed that your research project can be supported and there is adequate supervision for your area of research, you will be required to:

Complete these forms

and attach:

  • certified copies of all tertiary level academic transcripts (with grading information included) and award certificates. For Masters level programs, high school level transcripts and certificates should also be included.
  • a certified copy of your birth certificate or relevant pages of your passport
  • certified evidence of English language proficiency (minimum IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 or equivalent). (International students only)
  • a current curriculum vitae (CV)
  • any other supporting documentation required for the specific program admission requirements, as outlined in the USQ Handbook entry.

4.  If you are also applying for a scholarship, you will need to attach your relevant scholarship application with your research degree application.

5.  Please forward the application with the relevant attachments to the address listed on the application form. (Note: Faxed or electronic copies of your application will not be accepted).

6.  After you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the relevant Faculty and the Research and Higher Degree Committee (R&HDC). You should be aware this process takes on average 20 working days. If you have not made contact with a potential supervisor, or do not include certified copies of the required documentation, this process will take longer.  

Please note: Your proposed supervisor can make a recommendation on your admission only. The final decision on admission is undertaken by the Research and Higher Degree Committee.

7.  Once the review process is completed, formal advice on the application decision will be forwarded to you.  

8.  Once you have received your offer letter you will need to enrol in your relevant courses and pay tuition fees (if applicable) by the due date. Refer to your letter of offer and the USQ Handbook entry for your program's recommended enrolment pattern.
