Heritage Building Society Don Stevens Scholarship in Commerce
Heritage Building Society, Australia's largest Building Society and one of the nation's best performing financial institutions, is offering a scholarship to an undergraduate student who is currently enrolled in the second year of a USQ Commerce major at the Toowoomba Campus. This scholarship is available to on-campus students or multi-modal students.
The scholarship will be awarded for one year, and will allow the successful applicant to receive valuable financial support from Heritage Building Society in order to complete their studies. The scholarship aims to foster the development of students in the field of Commerce with the eventual goal of having them contribute to the business community.
Scholarship value
The Don Stevens Scholarship in Commerce will be awarded annually. The scholarship recipient will receive $3000 to be paid into a Heritage Building Society account, $1500 will be paid after the census date for Semester 1 and the balance of the scholarship to be paid after the Semester 2 census date.
Eligibility
Applicants must:

be citizens of Australia or have permanent resident status
-
have completed at least 8 university courses before receiving this scholarship and have maintained at least a 5.5 cumulative grade point average (it is preferred that completed courses be in commerce or business areas)

have a term residential address within the Heritage Building Society branch network.
Conditions
-
In 2009, applicants must enrol in at least 3 courses each semester through the USQ Toowoomba Campus.

Students must be pursuing an Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Law or General Commerce major at USQ.

Scholarship recipients may be asked to assist Heritage Building Society and / or USQ with the promotion of the scholarship as required by USQ Marketing and Public Relations, or USQ Faculty of Business.

The scholarship will be forfeited if:
-
the recipient enrols in fewer than 3 courses in any semester during which they receive this scholarship

the recipient defers their program of study during the scholarship period
-
the recipient withdraws from study at USQ
or
-
the recipient fails to maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 5.5 during the scholarship period.

The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient into a Heritage Building Society Account. It is the scholarship recipient's responsibility to open a Heritage Building Society Account and advise Student Services of their account details.

Scholarships are not transferable to other students in any circumstances.

Heritage Building Society and USQ reserve the right to not award the scholarship in a given year.

The recipient may be asked to participate in focus group research.

Scholarship recipients may be asked to complete up to 80 hours of work experience with Heritage Building Society at a time suitable to both parties. This aspect of the scholarship will be negotiated between the scholarship recipient and Heritage Building Society at the time the scholarship is accepted.

In the case of a third year applicant being offered the scholarship, the value of the scholarship may be indexed as appropriate to the amount of study left to be completed. In this case the scholarship value would be a maximum of $3,000 paid in up to two installments over a maximum of 1 year.

In the case of a second year student being offered the scholarship, the value of the scholarship may be increased, if agreed by Heritage and USQ Faculty of Business, to cover the period of study left to be completed. In this case the scholarship value would be a maximum amount of $6,000 paid in up to four installments over a maximum of two years. To be eligible for the additional scholarship funds the student must continue to meet the scholarship conditions above.

One scholarship will be awarded to the most outstanding applicant as judged by the scholarship selection panel. The decision of the panel is final.
Selection criteria
Applicants must:
-
have applied for enrolment or be enrolled in an eligible Faculty of Business major at USQ
-
demonstrate involvement in community service activities
-
articulate in a typewritten statement (maximum 300 words) why they chose to study Commerce at USQ and their interest in contributing to the business community
-
include permission for USQ to provide Heritage Building Society with your academic information, including the most recent semester's GPA.
