Education - Academic Excellence Scholarship

The Faculty of Education will offer an annual scholarship to Year 12 students attending schools in the Darling Downs, South-West Queensland, Springfield or Fraser Coast areas who successfully apply for entry to any Bachelor of Education degree program, or any combined degree program incorporating a Bachelor of Education, at the University of Southern Queensland.

Scholarship value

The scholarship has a value of $2,500 ($500 per semester for five semesters). This value will be reviewed annually. The scholarship will be used for the purchase of prescribed textbooks, stationery or equipment for use in connection with the student's program. Normally, purchase of books and stationery would be through the USQ Bookshop, though other arrangements may be considered by the Faculty.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • attend Year 12 in schools located in the Darling Downs, South-West Queensland, Springfield or Fraser Coast area
  • be less than 21 years of age on 31 January of the year in which the scholarship is awarded
  • have a high level of academic achievement
  • start their studies, full-time on-campus in Semester One 2010.

Selection criteria

  • An outstanding OP Score (1 to 5).
  • Evidence of awards/acknowledgements of outstanding achievements.
  • Demonstrated evidence of sustained contributions to the school's learning community e.g. school captain, school forums, prefect, sport, debating, music, clubs etc).
  • Evidence of understanding of teaching as a profession.
  • Evidence of enthusiasm for and commitment to education.
  • Evidence of involvement in social service to the community.

Conditions

  • Recipients must enrol on a full-time basis.
  • Recipients must be eligible to receive a Tertiary Entrance Statement.
  • The allocation will be available for the purchase of prescribed textbooks, stationery and appropriate equipment, including second-hand goods, in accordance with USQ purchasing regulations. There will be no cash allocation.
  • The scholarship will be forfeited if:
    • the recipient fails any courses in the program
    • the recipient cancels their enrolment in the program
    • the recipient changes their program of study to a degree program offered by another Faculty
  • The decision of the selection panel will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Applications

To ensure the Selection criteria are met applicants must provide the following:

  • a Statement of Support from a senior member of the school in which Year 12 was undertaken
  • a copy of the latest school report for Year 12
  • details of extra-curricular activities, within and outside the school
  • information about any prizes awarded
  • reasons for wishing to pursue a career in education (one-page typed statement or equivalent) (refer to Selection criteria 4 and 5)
  • any other information considered relevant.

Complete the USQ Scholarship Application Form (PDF* 502 KB)  and attach a Statement of Support (PDF 643 KB), signed by either your school principal or subject coordinator.
