Faculty of Education - Equity Scholarship

Many students experience difficulty with the costs of living and studying. This scholarship aims to assist students who experience financial difficulty arising from having limited income (e.g. reliance on Centrelink benefits, caring for others, high medical costs, etc).

Scholarship value

The scholarship has a value of $2,500 ($500 per semester for five semesters). The scholarship will be used for the purchase of prescribed textbooks, stationery or equipment for use in connection with the student’s program. Normally, purchase of books and stationery would be through the USQ Bookshop, though other arrangements may be considered by the Faculty.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • enrol on a full-time basis in the Bachelor of Early Childhood or any Bachelor of Education degree program, or any combined degree program incorporating a Bachelor of Education, at USQ
  • start their studies full-time on-campus or externally in Semester One 2009.

Selection criteria

  • Evidence of sustained commitment to, and achievement in, academic studies.
  • Evidence of financial hardship.
  • Evidence of sustained participation in, and commitment to, community and social service activities.
  • Evidence of understanding of, and enthusiasm for, teaching as a profession.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal and professional learning.

Conditions

  • Applicants must have applied for enrolment in a undergraduate degree or combined degree program offered through the Faculty of Education at USQ.
  • The allocation will be available for the purchase of prescribed textbooks, stationery and appropriate equipment, including second-hand goods, in accordance with USQ purchasing regulations. There will be no cash allocation.
  • The scholarship will be forfeited if:
    • the recipient fails any courses in the program
    • the recipient cancels their enrolment in the program
    • the recipient changes their program of study to a degree program offered by another Faculty.
  • The decision of the selection panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Applications

To ensure the Selection criteria are met applicants must:

  • state their reasons for wishing to pursue a career in education (one-page typed statement or equivalent) (refer to Selection criteria 4)
  • provide details of involvement in professional/community organisations relevant to their development as an individual
  • be able to demonstrate that they would otherwise find it difficult to pursue full-time on-campus study at USQ because of financial constraints
  • include copies of the following documentation:
    • certified copy of your current Health Care Card or your Pension Concession Card
    • Centrelink Income Statement for Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY, ABSTUDY or other government benefit
    • evidence of other income e.g. income tax return, pay slips or bank statements
    • evidence of all significant expenses e.g. rent, mortgage, medical expenses, major debts
    • support allowances from family or friends.
  • Provide any other information considered relevant.
