2013 activities
Full-day activities
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a set of fun and competitive activities involving principles of science, engineering and technology.
Escape from the Lost World
Students make a frame onto which motors, propellers and helium-filled balloons are attached. Points are awarded for speed and maneuverability of the craft. |
Gold Fever
Students build a small bridge from balsa, pins, tape, paddle pop sticks etc. Points are awarded for strength and load-carrying capacity (tested with dynamic loads). |
Hover Frenzy
Students construct a small hovercraft from motorised propulsion units, styrofoam, balsa, plastic and tape. Scoring is based on maneuverability, speed and ability to negotiate obstacles. |
| World Sailing Spectacular |
Students construct mast(s), rigging and sails for a model boat. A wind generator supplies air movement so that the boat sails a narrow water-filled tank. Points are awarded for speed. |
Half-day activities
Back to the Future II
Students are provided with a vehicle on which they attach a propeller or fan to drive the vehicle along rails. The students develop their own fan and can experiment with diameter and pitch.
Future Power
Students switch loads in or out of their power simulator. They chose power stations and adjust supply to meet the demand. If the system trips, all loads and power stations must be zeroed and the system built up again!
Puff Puff Golf
Students are given materials to build the chassis and axles for a light-weight car. The balloon will then be attached to the car and inflated. The balloon's deflation is the cars only propellant.
