2008 Regional Science and Engineering Challenge

Purpose of the Challenge

The Darling Downs Science and Engineering Challenge is held at USQ each year. It:

  • allows students to engage in a set of fun and competitive activities involving principles of science, engineering and technology
  • provides students with a challenge and a selection of materials to complete the set task
  • immediately engages students in activities with a minimum of introduction and theory
  • allows students to explore scientific principles for themselves rather than being guided to a predetermined answer.

How is the Challenge judged?

Each day eight schools will compete against each other. At the end of each day, the team with the most points will receive a trophy and the three highest scoring teams from throughout the Challenge will go on to compete in the Super Challenge against teams from northern New South Wales and Brisbane. The Super Challenge this year will be hosted by the University of Queensland in August 2008.

Registration

All places in the 2008 Challenge have now been filled.

It is proposed that the 2009 Challenge will be held between 12 to 15 May 2009. USQ will contact School Principals in December 2008 to advise when 2009 Challenge registrations will open. Registration is open to schools from across the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region.
