Facilities and equipment

The measurement of UV in the different environments in which we live is a complex task. The Solar UV group is able to overcome these difficulties by the use of various research pieces of equipment that are able to measure the visible and UV wavebands. This equipment includes:

  • a spectral UV measurement system in an environmentally sealed enclosure for automatic measurements at each five minute period of daylight of the spectral solar UV in 0.5 nm increments;
  • a laboratory based UV spectroradiometer;
     Erythemal and Broadband Meters
     Erythemal and Broadband Meters
  • a polymer casting table for the production of polysulphone UV dosimeters in thin film form;
  • a spectrophotometer for analysing the polysulphone UV dosimeters;
  • UV calibration lamps;
  • UV irradiation lamps;
  • a solar simulator;
  • a UV irradiation monochromator;
  • broadband UVA and erythemal UV outdoor meters automatically recording data every 5 minutes;
  • a broadband solar radiometer;
  • a diffuse erythemal UV outdoor meter automatically recording data every 5 minutes;
  • a handheld UVA and erythemal UV meter; and
  • a Total Sky Imager for automatically determining the fraction of cloud cover every 5 minutes.
